From harmonious sonorities to microtonal melodies, Joshua Marquez’s "Dirt" is an exploration of plant sounds. Taking data from the microfluctuations in conductivity between plants, Marquez weaves this information into a sonic tapestry combining data sonification and field recordings. The data collected informed certain musical parameters such as pitch and rhythm which were mapped onto the field recordings taken at Dirtbaby Farm during Marquez’s artist residency.

Tracks like “Root” and “Loam” feel submerged underground whereas the percussive swarms of “Disperse” and “Lush” produce swirling harmonic clouds above. “Emerge” and “Hum” evoke a sweltering heat in contrast to tracks like “Shelter” “Chamomile Chanting” that sound more like choir singing. All the sounds heard on "Dirt" were recorded at Dirtbaby Farm in Philadelphia.
